How to play Roll & Roast
Roll the dice, bring your pawns out of the yard and guide them home. Roll & Roast combines Ludo-inspired board-game rules with cartoon rivals who react to your moves and optional rule twists.
Play now1. Set up your match
Choose your name, color and opponents. Play solo against bots, with friends sharing the same device, or in a private online room where everyone uses their own, with two to four colors. The offline match in progress can be saved and resumed in this browser.
2. Roll and leave the yard
In Classic, you need to roll a six to enter your starting square, then move by the number shown. In Quick Match each player starts with one pawn already on their start square, and the goal is to bring two pawns home. With the optional Reserve Entry rule, a charge brings a pawn out of the yard without a six.
3. Choose a legal move
When several pawns can move, you only choose from the legal actions. The engine applies movement, blocks, safe squares and home-lane entry. If nothing is legal, the turn passes.
4. Capture rivals and stay safe
Landing on an opponent can send their pawn back to the yard, depending on the current rules. Safe squares offer special protection. Optional mine and portal tiles can be enabled.
5. Go Around or enter home
Near your home entrance the game may offer Go Around instead of entering the private lane when an outer-track capture is legal. In Classic you can also enable Play Until the End: play continues after the first winner until you finish your pawns.
6. Lessons, challenges and rivals
Five guided lessons use real engine positions. Challenges include a daily puzzle. Meet the rivals, local stories, and choose whether adaptive bots learn from your play on this device.
7. Play online with friends
In Play Online, create a private room and share the six-character code or the invite link; friends join, each on their own phone or computer. In the lobby everyone picks a color and gets ready, and the host sets the rules and can fill empty seats with bots. The rules are the same as offline, but the server rolls the dice and validates every move, so everyone sees the same result. If your connection drops, the game reconnects you to your seat; if you are away for more than 90 seconds, an announced stand-in bot plays your turns until you return.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play offline?
Yes. Once the first load and PWA asset caching are complete, solo and same-device play are designed to keep working offline. Only online rooms need a connection.
Can I play with friends?
Yes. On one device by passing it around, or on separate devices in a private online room for 2 to 4 people, invited by code or link.
How do online rooms work?
They are private and invite-only: there is no matchmaking with strangers, no account and no ranking. You can mix people and bots, and get back into the room after a reload. The offline game keeps working even if the server is unavailable.
How is Quick Match different?
The first player to bring two pawns home wins, instead of four, and each player starts with one pawn already on their start square. Movement and capture rules otherwise stay the same.
What is Reserve Entry?
An optional rule, off by default. Every 3 full rounds a single parachute bonus tile appears on the least crowded part of the track, for 60 seconds of active play. End a move on it to store one charge (you can hold one). On your turn, instead of rolling, you can spend it to bring a pawn from your yard to its start square: it is not a six and earns no bonus roll. If nobody has left the yard after 3 rounds, every player gets one emergency charge, once.
Do I need an account?
No. Neither offline play nor online rooms require an account: online you just pick a display name. Local match saves and preferences are stored in your browser.
